It is difficult to see how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is affecting our lives from moment to moment, and it is even harder to see how it will affect us in the near future.

Here is something we can all relate to: traveling. The average flight of a Boeing plane involves only seven minutes of human-steered flight, time that is typically reserved for takeoffs and landings.
Just like this example, there are many other instances in our daily lives when we are involved in and surrounded by AI without even thinking about it. Voice-powered personal assistants, music and movies recommendations, enhanced decision making, avoiding traffic or real-time manifestations, instant machine translation, self-driving vehicles, and other powerful predictive capabilities are several examples and applications of how Artificial Intelligence is used today.
Siri, Alexa, Tesla, Amazon, Netflix, Cogito, Pandora, and Boxever are some of the most popular examples of AI. We all may know this, but are we really aware of all those things that are –many of them within our reach– affecting our lives?
This is an interesting, but not so popular, list of things where Artificial Intelligence is making a difference now and will definitely impact the future:
- Preventing heart attacks: AI can now be used to potentially save your life. It has been used to scan medical data –in a very accurate way– and help predict if a patient is susceptible to heart attacks or strokes.
- Nest: The learning thermostat, which can now be voice-controlled by Alexa, uses behavioral algorithms to predictively learn about your heating and cooling needs, thus anticipating and adjusting the temperature in your home or office based on your own needs.

- Predictive purchasing: There is an anticipatory shipping project that will send you items before you need them. In theory, it could use your past spending habits for regular items and send them to you before they run out.
- Identifying criminals: Not only has AI identified the criminals with a high success rate but it has also managed to provide typical facial features that might indicate the person is less than law abiding.
- Search and rescue: Drones are already in use to provide real time footage of disaster areas. Artificial Intelligence permits the examination of large amounts of data, photos, and footage to help find missing people.
- Hiring (and perhaps firing): The world is working on this, and AI is expected to reduce the workload for employees, as well as make the tasks of hiring and recruiting easier, faster, and more efficient.
- Personalized health monitoring: Machine Learning is allowing us to monitor our health through devices (smart watches) that have made health telemetry a reality. The more personal data these algorithms are fed, the better they understand a user’s profile, enabling healthcare professionals to spot potential anomalies early on.
- Colorization of black and white images or movies: Deep Learning uses objects and their context within a photograph to color the image, much like a human operator might approach the problem.
- Text generation: This model is capable of learning how to spell, punctuate, form sentences, and capture the style of the text in the corpus. From short stories to writing novels, machines are churning out words like never before. Amazing, isn’t it?
- Object recognition and classification: This is the biggest database of labeled images, and it will be able to classify objects better than a PhD student who trained on the same task for over 100 hours.
- Real-time analysis of behaviors: This is a solution that uses Deep Learning to get real-time insights into the behavior of cars, people, and potentially other objects.
- Changing gazes of people in photos: Imagine you have a photo of someone and a Deep Learning network can change the gaze or look of that person.
- Create new images: A Deep Learning network can perform multiple tasks like create real street scenes from colored blobs, create a map from a real aerial photo, turn day scenes into night, and fill out the colors between edges of objects.
- Voice generation: In terms of automatic voice generation, Deep Learning is taking us a step closer to giving computers the ability to speak like humans do.
- Music composition: The same technology used for voice recognition can also be used to produce music compositions. For example, after the computer learns the patterns and statistics that are unique to the music of Chopin, it creates a completely new piece.
- Restoring sound in videos: It is possible to mute a video and ask the computer to regenerate the sound it expects to hear.
- Predicting earthquakes: Harvard scientists have used Deep Learning to teach a computer to perform viscoelastic computations, which are the ones used in predicting earthquakes. Until their paper, such computations were very computer intensive, but this application of Deep Learning has improved the calculation time by 50,000%. When it comes to earthquake calculation, timing is important, and this improvement can be vital in saving lives.
- Deep Learning networks creating Deep Learning networks: Deep Learning code can generate new deep learning networks. For example, Python code is trained to generate Python code.
