Brief description of the company
ARSAT (www.arsat.com.ar) is a leading provider of telecommunication and satellite solutions services in Argentina. Among their services, we can mention data processing, data and voice transmission, audio and video transmission and internet access.
ARSAT was created in 2006 as a satellite solution enterprise.
The challenge
ARSAT is a company with a strategic role in the implementation of Argentina’s State policies in matters of telecommunications, broadcasting and internet.
One of its main goals is to increase the satellite services, broadcasting and telecommunication presentations in the country, for public, private and government applications.
Among the ARSAT projects, REFEFO (Fiber Optic Federal Network) lies in a fiber optic network outline that includes the whole country. To make this possible, it is necessary to simulate the web we intend to use later on, as well as knowing which the best solutions are.
To simulate the web, it is necessary to test the supplier’s different route implementation proposals, and research new network components to improve the signal and its range.
Solution
Hexacta developed an integrated informatics solution for the simulation of the light dissemination with silicon fibers, which allowed the simulation of the ARSAT “Red Federal de Fibra Óptica” (Federal Fiber Optic Network). This simulation can be used by the people involved in the development and maintenance of the Red Federal de Fibra Óptica, as well as researchers, or simply for educative purposes.
This system allows:
- To design by a “case” graphic tool, a topology of components where the customer will be able to connect in a visual way.
- To simulate the dissemination in one-dimensional guides under different set of rules of power and pulse duration. Simulation is performed by a family of mathematical algorithms that makes a mathematical-scientific calculation using a matrix operation, Fourier transforms, etc. These algorithms are developed at Matlab, and the current project is also anticipating its migration to Python.
The development of this system avoided the purchase of similar software licenses for values ranging USD 70,000 annually. This solution is unique in the community since it is open source with academic and scientific purposes.
The success of the platform is aligned with the company’s goals about diffusion of academic and scientific activities in matters of research and development. The system was introduced in many community events, and it has been disseminated in different universities and journals in the world.
