Brief description of the company
Tenaris is a leading global manufacturer and supplier of seamless steel pipe products and provider of pipe handling, stocking and distribution services to the oil and gas, energy and mechanical industries (13% of world’s market share). The company has over 14,000 employees manufacturing facilities in en Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Venezuela.
The challenge
The main requirement was the design of a technological infrastructure to allow Tenaris to develop Intranet solutions that would satisfy the business requirements of the corporation. The main design aims were:
- Reduction and consolidation of multiple physical environments into one unified infrastructure.
- Allowing business users to manage the applications themselves (i.e., maintain dynamic contents themselves).
- Creation of development standards as well as guidelines for the usage of the core services provided by the new platform.
- Reduction in development and deployment times of the Intranet applications.
- Establishment of an integrated and homogeneous security framework to reduce the cost and effort of administering the Intranet.
Solution
Hexacta worked together with Microsoft Consulting Services in the preparation of the following end-products:
- Design of Tenari’s new Intranet Infrastructure, based on the understanding of the set of software modules and configurations required to support the Corporation’s Intranet.
- Design and development of a model for administering the new platform. When deployed, the new model would allow Tenaris to administer the Intranet centrally, even though the data would be distributed geographically. To achieve this goal, a whole new rethinking of the productive environment was developed including all physical components of the Intranet, such as servers, communication devices and tools, local networks, operating systems and more. The new designed architecture was based on Microsoft’s MSIB framework (Microsoft Solution for Internet Business). This framework groups the functionalities of the major products in the proposed solution such as MS Content Management Server and MS Commerce Server.
